President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order number 9066 in 1942 while Gyo Obata was a student at the University of California, Berkeley. It was where his father taught. As a result of this decision, some 120,000 persons of Japanese descent were deported from their homes and imprisoned in internment camps during World War II, two-thirds of whom were born in the United States.
