DeLorean attended the public schools in Detroit before being admitted into Cass Technical High School, a technical high school for honour students in Detroit, where he enrolled in the electrical programme. He found it thrilling and did exceptionally well in his studies.He received a scholarship to Lawrence Institute of Technology in the Highland Park neighborhood of Detroit now known as Lawrence Technological University in Southfield. Some of the top engineers in the car industry attended the little college as their undergraduate institution. John DeLorean was elected to the school’s honour society for his achievements in the study of industrial engineering. His studies were halted by World War II. He was selected for military service and spent three years in the American Army. To help his family’s financial situation, he spent a year and a half working as a draftsman for the Public Lighting Commission. He then went back to Lawrence to finish his degree. He continued to work part-time at Chrysler and a nearby body shop while attending college. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the university in 1948. Before entering the engineering workforce, DeLorean worked as a life insurance salesman. He developed an analytical system that was aimed at engineers and sold about $850,000 worth of policies in 10 months. He eventually left to work for the Factory Equipment Corporation because he found the job monotonous. According to DeLorean’s autobiography, he marketed life insurance to hone his interpersonal abilities. Although both businesses were financially successful, he had no interest in them. DeLorean was able to further his study while receiving practical experience in automobile engineering.He just spent a short time at the Detroit College of Law and never received a degree. He earned a master’s degree in automotive engineering from the Chrysler Institute in 1952 and joined Chrysler’s engineering department. The relationship between DeLorean and Sally Baldwin continued until his death in 2005. John DeLorean served as youngest division chief engineer in General Motors in company history and later in 1973, he left to start the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC).Due to production delays, the first car of DeLorean Motor Company did not reach the consumer market until 1981, at which time a weak purchasing environment was exacerbated by unfavorable assessments from both the public and the press which led to the downfall of the new car market. DeLorean’s $175 million investment expenses had not been recouped after a year, unsold vehicles had accumulated, and the business was in financial difficulties.At the time, DMC owed $17 million and was bankrupt. DeLorean was approached by Hoffman, a man he knew hardly at all and who had no past criminal history, and DeLorean was successful in arguing at trial that police entrapment was a procedural defence. After the end of the trial with a not guilty verdict in August 1984, DMC had already filed for bankruptcy and stopped operating.
