Later, Pirsig pursued a degree in Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota. He characterizes the main character in ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’, who is believed to be a representation of himself, as an unusual student who is more interested in science as a general subject than as a means to an end.Pirsig joined the US Army in 1946 and served in South Korea from 1946-1948. After receiving his Army discharge, he spent a few months in Seattle, Washington, before returning to the University of Minnesota, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1950. Pirsig describes his stay at MSC as a less than enjoyable experience in ‘Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance’, because of the philosophy instruction at the agriculture institution. Pirsig claimed that this hindered his capacity to create his ideas and works of literature, and to teach writing effectively. Pirsig didn’t make the trip from his home in Maine to Bozeman in December 2012, to accept the award, due to his ill health.Pirsig was highly bothered by the fact that there were multiple viable hypotheses for each phenomenon while working in the biochemistry lab. There seemed to be no end to the possibilities. He was baffled by the function and origin of hypothesis creation in scientific practice and could not find a strategy to minimize the number of hypotheses. He was so preoccupied with the question that he failed to continue earning good scores and lost interest in his studies.
